Strategies in cancer care

The Expert Advisory Group on Cancer reported to the Chief Medical Officer who endorsed the principles of equity of access to cancer services (the Calman Hine report).

Access to cancer services:

  • This set-up would be provided as close as possible to the patient's home.
  • There would be three levels of service, the primary care team, the cancer unit and the cancer centre.
  • The common cancers (breast, lung, colon and skin) would be managed at a unit level with referral onto a cancer centre for specialist activities, such as high dose chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
  • Surgical site specialisation was to be encouraged as was the provision of increased levels of non-surgical oncology.
