Strategies in cancer care
The Expert Advisory Group on Cancer reported to the Chief MedicalOfficer who endorsed the principles of equity of access to cancerservices (the Calman Hine report).
This would be provided as close as possible to the patient's home.
There would be three levels of service, the primary care team, the cancer unit and the cancer centre.
The common cancers (breast, lung, colon and skin) would be managed at aunit level with referral onto a cancer centre for specialistactivities, such as high dose chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Surgical site specialisation was to be encouraged as was the provision of increased levels of non-surgical oncology.
